You can use running numbers to track, organize, and manage objects efficiently within your project.
Configuring the Running Number property
Note: You need at least one existing type property; otherwise, there will be no basis for generating running numbers. Running Numbers can be based on Input, External Data and Model Data properties.
- Add Property.
- Select Function.
- Select Type; Function properties are only applicable for Types.
- Select Running Number as Function Type.
- Select Digits
- Do you want the running number to consist of 1, 2, 3, or 4 digits (1, 01, 001, 0001)?
-
Distinct By (required)
- In the Distinct By dropdown, select the property will distinguish each object from the others.
-
Group By (optional)
- In the Group By dropdown, select a property that will group the distinct objects.
- Consider the Running Numbers to be editable
- To manually edit the running numbers after they have been generated in the object table, check the box.
- Give the property a name and Add.
Displaying Running Numbers in the object table
Go to the Object table in the Manage section and select the Running Number property from the Select properties list. When you have values added in the distinct by/group by properties, you can see Running Numbers for all relevant objects.
An example of a Running Number property
- Running numbers will, in this example, be generated for objects that have both an Element Name and a Type Code value.
- The Running Number will start by 001 (3 digits).
- You can edit the Running Numbers manually. When doing so, a yellow exclamation icon will indicate that the number has been manually edited (see picture below).
Adding values to new objects
When you add distinct-by/group-by values to new objects the Running Number sequence is automatically updated.
Change the Running Number setup
When you edit your Running Number property, e.g. select new properties to distinct and group by, the running numbers in the object table are automatically updated.
